Gateway Foundation Strives To Enrich St. Louis Life & Culture

By supporting efforts to acquire, create, and improve tangible and durable art and urban design, the focus of Gateway Foundation is to foster and support cultural and artistic activities devoted to improving the quality of life for residents of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. Towards this end, we prioritize projects involving the acquisition, creation, or improvement of items of a durable, physical nature.
Applicants are required to contact Foundation staff to schedule a conversation at which staff will review eligibility and discuss the request to determine if an invitation to apply will be extended.

Funding Priorities

Gateway Foundation Engages Three Strategic Realms Of Funding


  • Company Logo Grant making to non-profit arts organizations based in and operating throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan Area
  • Company Logo Support of lighting and parks projects integral to the cultural fabric of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area
  • Company Logo Sculpture loans which make pieces accessible to residents within and between the patchwork of St. Louis neighborhoods
Funding and Lighting Projects:

Applicants for grant funding or lighting project awards must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an arts agency serving the St. Louis community
  • 501(c)(3) status
Application Process:
  • Determine Eligibility: Applicants are required to contact Foundation staff to schedule a conversation, at which staff will review eligibility and discuss the request to determine if an invitation to apply will be extended.
  • Craft and Submit Full Proposal: Full Proposal requirements will be sent to invited applicants. Applicants are asked to work with Foundation staff from invitation to submission to ensure a comprehensive proposal is prepared.
  • Proposal Review: Proposals will be reviewed by Gateway Foundation Board of Trustees, and award decisions will be communicated to applicants.
Application Timeline:
  • Deadline to submit applications: August 1st
  • Board Meeting for full-proposal review: mid-September
  • Notification of award decisions by: mid-October
  • Date funds become available for disbursement: November 1st
Sculpture Loan Program:

Applicants for a sculpture loan must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a St. Louis-based organization with an emphasis on serving the community, or serves as an anchor for the community, or has a mission centering the arts
  • 501(c)(3) status
  • Applicants are required to contact Foundation staff to schedule a conversation, at which time staff will review eligibility and discuss the request to determine if placement of a piece will be further considered.

Gateway Foundation Does Not Fund the Following: Endowment funds or capital campaigns • Promotional projects such as publications or videos • General operations, travel, or conferences • Fund-raising events or advertising • Purchase of office equipment • Social service programming
