Puryear was born in 1941, in Washington D.C. After graduating from the Catholic University of America in 1963, he joined the Peace Corps, and studied at Yale. Puryear has received numerous grants and awards, including his Gold Medal for Sculpture, from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, in 2007.
