Mitoraj was born in the German Oederas, in 1944. He survived the bombing of Dresden and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, in 1963. By 1980 he was holding one-man exhibitions and by 2000, he was exhibiting at museums and sculpture gardens. The celebrated artist is best know for his monumental public creations, many featuring fragmented body parts, adorning key locations in countries including Britain, France and Italy. He died October 6, 2014.
