Botero was born in 1932 in Medellin, Columbia. In 1953 he enrolled in the Academy of San Marco in Florence, Italy. He was appointed professor of painting at the Art Academy of Bogota in 1958, and in 1959 he won a Guggenheim prize at the V Biennial Exhibition of San Paulo. In the last thirty years, he has achieved international recognition for his paintings, drawings and sculpture. In 2012, he received the Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award from the International Sculpture Center.
