Niki de Saint Phalle was born in 1930, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. In 1937, she moved to New York City. From 1948-1949 she worked as a successful fashion model, but she moved back to France in 1952 and began studying art. What followed was a successful sculpture career, which included the 12th Praemium Imperial Prize in Japan, in 2000.
